Sawnee Mountain Reconfigured 5-26-18
I hike Sawnee Mountain all the time, but I definitely don't write about each trip because that would be like several posts a month about the same thing haha. It's one of my "maintenance hike" and one I can do pretty much whenever because the trail head at Bettis Tribble Gap Road is only like 15 mins from my house. The Spot Road trail head is a little further away but I have hiked Sawnee Mountain from both points numerous times. I don't feel like I get a great workout starting from Bettis Tribble Gap though. The trail up to the Indian Seats is so short, probably only a mile or so total. So I studied the map and my ViewRanger (seriously love this app) and found another option to use at the Bettis Tribble Gap trail head.
The main trail at Bettis Tribble Gap starts just north of the bathrooms and is the one most people probably take. On the west side of the bathrooms/parking area, however, you can also pick up a trail heading west which extends the route before hitting the Indian Seats from the southwest. Ultimately all these trails are the "Indian Seats Trail" but it sort of layers on itself like an onion. I never really realized this before. So I managed to turn it into a loop that came just short of 2 miles. I believe you could probably extend it a little more with a different reconfiguration so maybe I will try that next. It was very cloudy and I figured it was going to rain (although it ended up not raining all day- figures), so I was happy I could get up and back quickly with a little longer workout mixed in. Another bonus of this trail configuration- it does pass the "creepy mine" although I didn't take any pictures this time. The ominous sky darkened it even more so I moved past pretty quickly!
